#9 Meet Eve

Eve has been in love with Hill since the day she first met him—no matter that she was only three at the time.

And what did it matter that the first time they met as adults she kneed him in… uh, well… in a rather vulnerable spot? She apologized almost immediately.

Well, almost immediately.

After a few more arguments and several more bumps in the road, Eve and Hill found that the feelings they had tried to ignore were only growing stronger. And, after spending one long summer month together (supposedly acting as chaperones for their friends) both knew they were meant to be together.

“Ever the opportunist, Hill leaned toward Eve and brushed his lips over hers, softly stroking their smoothness. He pressed gently and, trailing a finger down her cheek, he slowly traced the line between her lips with the tip of his tongue, urging them to part. When she kissed him back and parted her lips, he slipped his tongue in to find hers, waiting for her to object.

And when she said nothing, he descended deeper into the kiss, increasing the pressure and demanding she reply.

Much to his delight, she did.

When Hill was called back to London, Eve knew it was only a matter of time before they’d be announcing their engagement.

And then…

Crickets.

No letter, no message, no nothing. Unless, of course, you counted the reports from Eve’s best friend that Hill was back to his old scandalous ways and once again the talk of the town gossips.

Eve was furious—at Hill, obviously—but more at herself for believing the silky words of such a rogue. A command performance at the wedding of Avery and Linney—with Eve as the maid of honor and Hill as best man—only serves to further confuse her head and hurt her heart.

READ AN EXCERPT

Watching Hill flirt with all the ladies at the wedding is the last straw. Eve decides that the only way forward is to get as far away from Hill as possible. Maybe distance will give her heart a chance to heal. Immediately after the ceremony she heads north to the family estate at the Scottish border hoping to immerse herself in the task of finishing her father’s work—a commission from the King himself for a detailed map of the United Kingdom. She’s only just begun to focus on her work when she realizes that Hill has followed her (literally) to the very ends of the earth.

What does he want from her? And how will her heart ever mend when she can’t get away from the man who broke it?
